Razor bumps are one of those problems that can make a clean shave feel like a bad decision. They show up fast, they itch, and they always seem to hit the neck the hardest.
The good news: most razor bumps are preventable with the right prep, the right technique, and a little patience.

At Venice Barbershop, we see this all the time—and we’re the only walk-in barbershop in Venice that offers a classic hot lather shave. If you deal with bumps, irritation, or that angry red neck after shaving, this one’s for you.
What Causes Razor Bumps?
Razor bumps (often called ingrown hairs) happen when a hair gets cut too short or at the wrong angle, then curls back into the skin. The neck is a prime target because:
- Hair grows in multiple directions
- The skin is thinner and more sensitive
- Most guys shave the neck too fast (or press too hard)
1. Use Heat First (Hot Shower or Hot Towel)
Heat softens the hair and relaxes the skin. If you shave cold and dry, you’re basically asking the razor to tug.
- Shave after a hot shower, or
- Hold a warm, damp towel on your neck for a minute before shaving
2. Don’t Shave Against the Grain on Your Neck
This is the biggest mistake.
Shaving against the grain can feel closer, but it also increases the chance the hair will snap below the skin line and grow inward.
Tip: run your hand over your stubble to figure out which direction your neck hair grows. Shave with that direction first.
3. Use a Sharp Blade (and Change It More Often Than You Think)
Dull blades cause tugging, skipping, and repeated passes—all of which irritate the skin.
- If your blade pulls, it’s done
- If you’re doing 3–4 passes in the same spot, it’s done
4. Light Pressure Wins
Most razor bumps come from pressure and repetition.
Let the blade do the work. If you’re pressing hard, you’re scraping skin—not shaving hair.
5. Use a Real Shave Cream (Not Just Foam)
A good shave cream or lather gives the razor glide and cushion. Cheap foam dries out fast and offers less protection.
If you want the gold standard, it’s warm lather + hot towel prep—the classic barbershop method.
6. Rinse With Cool Water + Keep It Clean
After shaving:
- Rinse with cool water to calm the skin
- Pat dry (don’t rub)
- Keep the area clean and avoid heavy, oily products right away
7. Give Your Neck a Break When You Can
If you’re shaving daily and constantly battling bumps, try shaving every other day for a week and see what happens. Even a small break can let irritation settle down.
