Aftershave is one of the most misunderstood parts of shaving.
Many men believe the burn means it’s working. But most of the time, that sting is just irritation.

So what should you use after a shave, a balm or a splash?
And if you want the smoothest finish with the least irritation, remember: we’re the only walk-in barbershop in Venice that offers a classic hot lather shave.
The difference in plain English
Aftershave splash
A splash is usually a liquid with alcohol and fragrance.
Best for:
- men with oily skin
- men who don’t get razor burn easily
- guys who like that classic barbershop feel
Watch out for:
- stinging on sensitive neck skin
- dryness and tightness after shaving
Aftershave balm
A balm is usually a lotion-style product designed to calm and moisturize.
Best for:
- sensitive skin
- dry skin
- men who get neck irritation or bumps
Watch out for:
- heavy, scented balms that clog pores
What we recommend for most men
If you’re prone to redness, bumps, or irritation, start with a simple, unscented balm.
If your skin is tough and you like the classic finish, a splash can be fine, but don’t use it as a badge of honor.
The real key: prep + technique
Aftershave helps, but it can’t fix a bad shave.
If you want fewer bumps:
- use heat first (shower or warm towel)
- use warm lather and let it sit
- shave with the grain on the neck
- use light pressure
Want the easiest upgrade?
A professional hot lather shave gives you the prep and technique most guys can’t replicate at home.
