Most shaving problems don’t start with the razor.

They start before the razor—when you rush, shave dry, or try to cut tough hair without softening it first.

Here’s a simple shave prep checklist that helps prevent razor burn, bumps, and neck irritation.

And if you want the smoothest option with the least irritation, we’re the only walk-in barbershop in Venice that offers a classic hot lather shave.

The shave prep checklist

1) Heat first

2) Clean the skin

A quick wash removes oil and grit so the blade glides instead of skipping.

3) Use real lather (and let it sit)

Apply warm lather and give it 30–60 seconds to soften the hair.

4) Check your blade

If it tugs, it’s done. Dull blades cause extra passes and irritation.

5) Good light + mirror angle

Neck hair grows in weird directions. If you can’t see it, you’ll over-shave it.

6) First pass with the grain (especially on the neck)

This is the easiest way to reduce bumps.

The biggest mistake: shaving fast and dry

If you only change one thing, change this:

Slow down, use heat, and use light pressure.
