If shaving your neck leaves you with redness, razor burn, or bumps that stick around for days, you’re not alone. The neck is the toughest area to shave because the hair grows in different directions and the skin is more sensitive.

Below is a simple, practical method that works for most men—especially if you shave often for work.
And if you want the smoothest option possible, remember: we’re the only walk-in barbershop in Venice that offers a classic hot lather shave.
Step 1: Map Your Neck Growth (This Changes Everything)
Most guys shave their neck like their cheeks—straight down, fast, and with pressure. Problem is, neck hair doesn’t grow one direction.
Before you shave, rub your hand across your stubble in different directions and notice what feels rough. That’s the grain.
- First pass: shave with the grain
- Second pass (optional): shave across the grain
- Avoid: shaving against the grain on the neck unless you know your skin can handle it
If you want a deeper breakdown, read How to Prevent Razor Bumps (Especially on the Neck) and use it as your checklist.
Step 2: Use Heat First (Hot Shower or Hot Towel)
Heat softens the hair and relaxes the skin so the blade glides instead of grabbing.
- Best: shave right after a hot shower
- Or: hold a warm, damp towel on your neck for one minute
This is one of the reasons a traditional barbershop shave feels so different.
Step 3: Lather Like You Mean It
Foam in a can works, but it dries fast and doesn’t protect your skin as well.
Use a quality shave cream or warm lather and give it 30–60 seconds to soften the hair before you start shaving.
Step 4: Use a Sharp Blade and Light Pressure
A dull blade forces you to do extra passes. Extra passes cause irritation.
- If it tugs, change it
- If you’re pressing hard, back off
- Let the blade do the work
Step 5: Short Strokes + Rinse Often
Long strokes on the neck lead to skipping and repeated scraping.
Use short strokes, rinse the blade often, and don’t chase “perfect smooth” in one pass.
Step 6: Cool Rinse + Simple Aftercare
When you’re done:
- Rinse with cool water
- Pat dry (don’t rub)
- Keep the area clean
- Avoid heavy oils or thick products right away
